Siols Visionary: Dennis Pemsel - Trailrunner - SIOLS Sports Glasses

Siols Visionary: Dennis Pemsel - Trailrunner

When Dennis Pemsel runs, conditions rarely stay predictable.

The trail changes. The light shifts. The wind picks up. Not one after another, but all at once. That's exactly what makes trail running so rewarding, and exactly what makes it so demanding.

"During ultra-distance mountain races, conditions can change constantly between sunshine, rain, storms and darkness," Dennis says. It sounds like adventure. For a long time, though, it mostly meant one thing: compromise.

Every change in conditions meant changing eyewear."My biggest problem was that I never had a single pair of glasses that could adapt to different environments," Dennis explains. "To cover every type of weather, I would have needed a different pair for each one." His eyes leave little room for compromise. Wind dries them out. Dust causes irritation almost instantly. "My eyes become extremely dry in the wind, so I need eyewear for almost every outdoor activity," he says. And the need doesn't end when the run is over. "I also need glasses for driving." It may sound like a small detail. For Dennis, it never was.

Out on the trail, under real pressure, those little details suddenly become very big. Fogged lenses. Slipping frames. Contact lenses that decide to quit exactly when you need them most. "Fogging, slipping, the hassle of contact lenses, changing light conditions... those were the constant issues," Dennis says. They're easy to ignore until they aren't. Today, those problems are simply gone. Not because the conditions have become easier, but because the solution has become better.

"With SIOLS, I was able to solve all of those problems with a single pair of glasses." Although, in Dennis's case, that one pair comes with its own story. His personal favorite isn't the latest high-tech innovation. It's an older special edition with a wood-look finish. Not the newest. Not the most sophisticated. Just the one he loves wearing. Apparently, it's become something of an inside joke at SIOLS. As Dennis puts it, the company's founder regularly "gives me a funny look" because of his unwavering loyalty to that old pair.

When performance really matters, though, Dennis reaches for the setup he knows will work. No debate. No nostalgia. "The Vario lens is simply the all-rounder," he says. Its strengths reveal themselves mile after mile. The sun comes out, and the lens darkens. The trail disappears into the forest, and it brightens again.

No swapping lenses. No second-guessing. No interruptions. "When it's bright, the lens darkens automatically. As soon as you run into a forest section, it becomes lighter again, giving you perfect vision." Even when daylight fades completely, it remains dependable. "Even in the dark, the Vario lens is still incredibly reliable."

Then there's something you only notice once it's missing: protection. Especially when the weather suddenly turns. "For me, the size of the lens is crucial. It protects my eyes really well when conditions become stormy," Dennis explains. The real test doesn't happen during routine training. It happens where the weather refuses to compromise.

Like in England. "I left my runner's heart in England," he says with a grin. It may sound romantic, but the conditions certainly aren't. Rain. Wind. Constantly changing light. Often for hours at a time. That's where equipment either proves itself or falls short. "For me, good eyewear is essential equipment because my eyes are simply too important," Dennis says. His requirements are straightforward. No compromises. *"I need eyewear that performs in storms, stays securely in place, and works just as well in darkness as it does in bright sunshine."

In the past, that would have meant carrying more, changing more, and compromising more. "To cover all those conditions, I'd probably have to carry three or four different pairs of glasses," Dennis says. Today, it's much simpler. One pair does it all. "With SIOLS, everything comes together in a single pair. It's practical and good for your wallet." It may not sound spectacular. But that's exactly where the difference lies. No more reacting to changing conditions. No more second-guessing. No more changing eyewear. Just running.
